Art in Second Life 2023 (35) “Fourth Wall” by Kitten @ Nitroglobus Roof Gallery

Dido Haas invited me to see the July exhibition at her Nitroglobus Roof Gallery: “Fourth Wall” by Kitten (joaannna). The exhibition will be opened tonight, Monday, July 3rd 6th, at 12 PM SLT (9 PM Central Europe Time) with music by hEIN! (heinrichmader) and particles by Kurk Mumfuzz.

“Fourth Wall” by Kitten consists of 11 large pictures presented at the main hall of Nitroglobus Roof Gallery with it’s magic mirror floor. The poster above was made by David Silence based on one of the exhibited pictures, Adwehe provided the (light) art specially created for this exhibition.

Kitten (joaannna) wrote about her exhibition “Fourth Wall”:
These images were all made in my own studio and loosely themed around an imaginary photo shoot. They are in a way and attempt to breach the fourth wall by trying to break down the conceptual wall between the picture and the artifice used to obtain it.
Breaking the fourth wall means doing or saying something that either explicitly or implicitly acknowledges the artificiality of the environment and the fact that both the presenters and audience are aware of that artificiality. This is a wider comment I think on art in Second Life as a whole, which is by its very nature an artificial environment. In my images I am trying to show the artificiality of the environment by revealing the lights used to illuminate the subject on show, showing models caught off camera, as well as models dressing for the shoot. However, how much is deliberate and how much is accidental, that is for the viewer to judge.
These images are more personal than my previous works. Some asking questions about the way I live my Second Life. However, they are a continuation of the style in my previous exhibition at Nitroglobus; i.e. all monochrome, utilizing strong directional lighting and blurred backgrounds. The pictures tend to be high in contrast and grainy, and with a vintage/noir feel to them.
I like to thank the three models who took part in addition to myself: Magic and Rain Lacroix and Dido Haas who is fittingly portrayed in a typically flamboyant dress.
If there is a visual summing up then it would be the picture ‘Alice’. I am reading the book ‘Alice In Wonderland’ whilst picture taking goes on around me. For me living in Second Life has always felt like a trip down that rabbit hole into Wonderland.

Because Kitten’s pictures shown at “Fourth Wall” are in black and white they have a touch of vintage. Yes, you can’t really differentiate between a snapshot taken during a session and a the “real” picture. All pictures are very erotic and most of them include D/s. That’s no surprise considering that Kitten is active in the D/s scene. I really like all of the pictures! If I had to choose a favourite, one would be the picture showing two obviously dominant women taking a break of the photo session and the sub involved is kneeling there obediently. Right next to the picture “Alice” you see another picture showing a D/s scene. The whole exhibition radiates pure erotic in my eyes.

I saw Kitten’s work at Michiel Bechir Gallery in March 2022 (read here) and I saw her exhibition “Noir” that was shown the annex of Nitroglobus Roof Gallery (read here) Kitten is in Second Life since December 2019. She wrote about herself and her art: “Kitten was first drawn to second life photography in 2020 initially by seeing the results produced by entrants in a photography competition at the sim where she works. All her pictures are taken inworld and are only a little edited afterwards.
Her big love is landscape photography and she travels the grid in search of the perfect shot her pictures revealing her love of nature, the sea, exotic ruins as well as parasols and umbrella’s. Her pictures look to showcase the myriad ways in which light makes a picture, the gaudy autumn colours, reflections, the play of light on the water and towering cloudscapes.
Recently though she has been drawn to black and white photography and to pictures that try to convey emotions rather than showing just a pretty landscape. Her exhibition Noir at Nitroglobus last year (read here) showed the first fruits of this love. And in her latest exhibition she is seeking to push this style to a new level.

You can see more of Kitten (joaannna)’s art at her flickr page, at Deviant Art and at her own Ammonite Photography & Gallery.

Nitroglobus Roof Gallery is owned and curated by Dido Haas. Thank you, Dido for providing the space for the art and for enabling the exhibition “Fourth Wall” by Kitten (joaannna). Thank you Kitten for your art, a great exhibition!

Art in Second Life 2023 (31) “Far From” by Bamboo Barnes @ Selen’s gallery

Bamboo Barnes opened a new exhibition at a skybox, which is a part of Selen’s Gallery. You can either visit using a teleporter from Selen’s Gallery or you use a direkt landmark to Bamboo’s skybox. Bamboo Barmes titled her exhibtion “Far From”. It was opened June 6th and should be available until August 2023.

The exhibition “Far From is in a skybox. In the center is kind of a stage. You can walk up and have a view from there. The stage is decorated with colourful 3D objects, the sides are used to display either pictures or changing textures. The whole stage is an eye catcher in the center. Along the walls of the skybox Bamboo presents her artwork. Quite her style, colourful, consisting of several layers, female portraits, but not just portraits, artwork with several other elements, some are also changing permanently.

Bamboo provided a text accompanying her exhibition “Far From”:

What do you feel now if you close your eyes?
Do you see the faint flicker of light that your memory gives you as you reach out in total darkness?
Or is it something you wish you could have forgotten?
A past that has become distant yet drawing you in heavily. The now that seems so far from it, but it is a part of you.
A part of you that can never be denied.

This is my exhibition start in June 2023 at Selen’s gallery,my sincere thanks to Selen Love for this opportunity. My works are representing the world with slightly distorted than a beautiful elegance sky of the early summer morning. You may think you have nothing to do with distortion of the world …. maybe you are lucky or just haven’t seen it in the dark corner of yourself. I am not a good talker, so here I let you feel whatever you feel from my works, grateful if you feel something different than everyday life from them or you may feel nothing even. Thank you.

I enjoyed looking at the pictures and exploring the details. Isat down on a bench and became part of this world. The colours are impressive. You have to look long and focused on the faces to get the details or to differentiate what is the face and what is added. Each picture is an eye-cather for every living room.

Bamboo is in Second Life for over 15 years already, painting software & photoshop are her best friends. Bamboo had many exhibtions and appearances in the Second Life art scene and in 2018 she had her first exhibition in real life: “I create what I see but maybe you won’t, they are about people’s reality and  mind.
Bamboo’s art is a mixture of abstract forms, of people and photographs. Most pictures are colourful and it is in the eye of the beholder what we see in her pictures.
I myself saw her work the first time at La Maison d’Aneli during the Holiday season 2019/2020 (read here). I also saw her exhibition “Marginal Mannerism” at DixMixGallery in April 2021 (read here), the exhibition “Meant to be” at Itakos Art Gallery last year (read here), I saw “Conjure” at FOCUS Magazine F.A.I.R Gallery in August 2021 (read here), “Mindstorm” at IMAGO Land (read here) and “Drawer” at Hannington Arts Foundation (read here). In December 2021 I saw her exhibition “The path” at Art care gallery (read here) and 2022 i visited “Metaphysics” at the Kondar Art Center, (read here), Colores Primarios (read here), “New Day”  (read here) and  “Personal Aspect” (read here). This year I saw “Unusual” at Kondor Art Center (read here). One could say, I’m a fan of Bamboo’s art!

Art in Second Life 2023 (21) “Unusual” by Bamboo Barnes @ Kondor Art Center

Bamboo Barnes opened a new exhibition at The Kondor Art Center on April 20th. It is named “Unusual“. The music at the opening event was provided once again by hEIN! (heinrichmarder).

I visited a few days before the opening as Bamboo invited me over. And I mixed up the exhibitions! Bad me. The only excuse I have is that it was late. And yes, I was a bit irritated as the pictures didn’t fully fit to her style. But they were colourful, that detail fitted. Anyway, to make up for it I visited again today. So not only the title is “Unusual” but also this revised post. Thank you for your art, Bamboo .. and thank you for your understanding.

Unusual” is exhibited on two floors of the exhibition building and consists of close to 40 pictures and rotating 3D objects. Most show female portraits, some more than just one and some female bodies. But all are processed with added layers, with 2nd and 3rd and 4th layers geometric forms that change the the appearance. Often the original portrait is hard to see and you have to immerse yourself to make up your own picture. And as usual for Bamboo Barnes’ style “Unusual” (what a nice pun) all pictures impress by their colourfulness. The 3D objects at the entrance and behind the stairs to the 2nd floor change permanently as the single objects rotate and as on the surfaces several pictures and faded in and out. This way you always get an unique view.

Bamboo wrote in an accompanying notecard about “Unusal“:
I was taught to always compare myself to others and to stand within the line that was drawn. To not even think about what would happen after I crossed that line.
What is normal and what is unusual, it kept me bound inside for quite a few years.
One day I jumped off of it and landed in a world of chaos, and since then everything has changed in my world, above and below. The good and the bad. Everything was new.
Now I wish I could relive that time of joy and awe all over again.”

Art in Second Life 2022 (73) “New Day” by Bamboo Barnes

Bamboo Barnes is going to open a new exhibition at The Hannington Arts Foundation today, on August 19th, 12 pm slt (9 pm CET).

I visited on August 15th. Bamboo added these thoughts to her exhibition called “New Day“:

A slithering, damp darkness.
A blood stained rainbow, shed by a stagnant sky.
When was the last time you cried,
covering the scars that linger in your heart.
Yesterday’s tears and a new day’s embrace
on outstretched fingers.

When I think of Bamboo Barnes, I immediately think of colours, of colourful pictures, of a feast of colours. All exhibitions that I saw from her were colourful – and so is “New Day”

All of the exhibited pictures show females, mostly female faces. But the faces are often blurry and other elements cover them, layers of colour, simple lines, geometric patterns. You have to focus to see the face clearly itself, if you can at all. There are two pictures where Bamboo just choose a different set of colours for the same picture – and of course it looks different.

Some pictures express pain, misery and worries. The colour red is often used to express that – as are bright and happy colours like yellow express a new beginning, a new day. A new day is always positive. It has the mystery of a new beginning, a fresh start, leaving yesterday behind us – not to make it forgotten but to embrace the mystic that is in all beginnings.

I see this positive energy in the yellow picture, that is right where you land next to the notecard giver. The picture is called “Too long 2022” and shows a female face bathed in yellow on the left very blurred with several several layers and on the right more clearer, as if the sun had cleared it up.
The picture used for the exhibition poster is called “Solace 2”. Solace is what you need when you grieve. Solace shall help you to gather the energy to start a new day. Hence this picture is kind of both considering Bamboo’s thoughts about “New Day“.

When I visited “New Day” on August 15th the exhibition space was not yet finished. I visited again, Thursday, August 18th. Kerupa Flow added 3D art objects to the exbibition, that fit well into the theme. They are named “Birth place”, “Fetal Movement” and “I’ll be sure to find you” – so the theme “New Day” is accompanied by “New Life”. The 3D objects are not completely static. In “Fetal Movement” one part is appearing and vanishing, “Birth place” and “I’ll be sure to find you” look different from every angle and have light effects to liven up the objects.
